Pay-Per-Click Advertising

In a similar way to search engine optimisation, search engine marketing is all about people finding your site in the search results. This time though it relates to the links that you see at the top of the results page and to the right hand side of the organic search results list. These two areas are where paid advertising appears.

These ads show up based on the same principles we mentioned regarding search terms previously but instead of looking at words in your site the search engines make your ads appear because you are willing to hand over money (pay!) to have your site appear for that search term or phrase. This is also called Pay-Per-Click Advertising which means that you only pay if somebody clicks on your ad. The cost per click varies considerably depending on the popularity of the words or phrases you want to rank for.
